The history of hypnosis , what is Hypnotherapy and it's clinical applications? by Sian Barnard, clinical hypnotherapist london focused
History of Hypnosis
Hypnotic therapy is the oldest of all healing techniques. The Egyptians used it in their Sleep Temples and it can be seen through the histories of ancient Rome and Greece. The Native American Indians and the Aborigines also utilise the phenomena of trance.
In the Middle Ages disease was treated through touch and the use of prayer. By the 18th century Mesmerism became popularised by Franz Anton Mesmer who believed that illness was caused by the magnetic influence of astral bodies. He would induce, rather ceremoniously, a trance like state which he called animal magnetism. Not surprisingly, he was later discredited. However, the term 'mesmerised' has remained in our vocabulary.
It wasn't until the 19th century when James Braid re-examined mesmerism in a more scientific way and found how powerful the use of suggestion was that hypnosis was recognised with respectability and also given it's new name.
At the beginning of the century hypnosis was being used mainly by stage hypnotists. While the early psychoanalysts, Freud and Jung dabbled in it. In 1955 the British Medical Association endorsed the practice of hypnosis in medical education where it has since been seen as a respectable and useful aid to conventional treatments.
What is hypnosis ?
It's a state of deep relaxation accompanied by feelings of incredible well being. The mind becomes focused inwards an less attention is given to what's going on in the room or outside the window. Very much like day dreaming or as you are about to drop of to sleep but are not actually asleep yet.
Because the conscious mind, which is ever evaluating and critical, is in a less dominant state, access can be gained to our unconscious mind; the part of us that governs our subconscious actions and thoughts. Old patterns of behaviour can be changed at the source and because the unconscious is also a reservoir of unrecognised strength and knowledge we can tap into it to bring out the full potential of an individuality.
Just like you can't force someone into a daydream you can't force someone into a trance like state. And while the unconscious is very susceptible to suggestion it will reject anything that goes against the moral code of that individual or indeed anything that is not acceptable.
What is Hypnotherapy ?
Using hypnosis for the treatment of psychological and somatic symptoms is termed hypnotherapy. A hypnotherapist is bound by ethical and moral codes the same as a doctor is, this includes confidentiality.
The Clinical Applications of Hypnosis
Hypnosis can be used for both medical and psychological problems. It is estimated that 85% of all age groups will respond to clinical hypnotherapy quite easily. It is often successful where other treatments have failed.
Hypnotherapy works well for the following conditions:
- Habit Breaking - smoking, excessive drinking, gambling, nail biting, stuttering, bed wetting etc
- Emotional Conditions - phobias, compulsions, sleeping problems, anxieties, self confidence, guilt, jealousy etc
- Relief and remission from breathing, stomach and nervous problems,.
- Weight control, improving concentration and memory for study or sports performance
- Skin problems
- Pain Control - minor surgery, dentistry, childbirth, period pains, arthritic and muscular pain.
- Sexual Problems - premature ejaculation and frigidity and others.
- Removal of feelings of stress and tensions caused by everyday living
Hypnotheraputic results last a very long time and are often permanent. This is increased tenfold with the application of self hypnosis during and after treatment. Hypnotherapy is gentle and natural so therefore safe and without side effects.
